How to Add or Change Your Apple ID Payment Method

Your Apple Account’s payment methods pay for App Store purchases, subscriptions such as Apple Music and iCloud+, and purchases your family makes through Family Sharing. Here is where to add, change or remove a payment method on each device, following Apple’s own support articles, and how to enter a prepaid card correctly.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings and tap your name
  2. Tap Payment & Shipping
  3. To add a card, tap Add Payment Method
  4. To remove an old one, tap Edit, tap the red delete button next to it, then tap Remove

On a Mac

  1. Open the App Store and click your name at the bottom of the sidebar
  2. Click Payment Methods
  3. Click Add Payment Method, or click Edit and then Remove Payment Method to take one off

On a Windows PC or the web

  • On a Windows PC: click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, click View My Account, then click Manage Payments next to Payment Information
  • On the web: Apple’s support article links to the billing page of your account at apps.apple.com, where you can update your payment method

Which payment method Apple charges first

Apple’s Media Services Terms say that your primary payment method appears at the top of your account’s payments page, and: “If your primary payment method cannot be charged for any reason (such as expiration or insufficient funds), you authorize Apple to attempt to charge your other eligible payment methods in order from top to bottom as they appear on your account settings payments page.”

So put the card you want charged at the top. Apple’s support article also explains how to change the order in which your payment methods are billed. If the top card is prepaid, keep enough on it for the next charge, or Apple moves on to the next one in the list.

iCloud+ and Family Sharing

  • iCloud+ is billed monthly once you upgrade. Apple accepts credit cards, debit cards and Apple Account balance for iCloud+, and if your balance does not cover the plan, the remaining amount is charged
  • If you cancel iCloud+, Apple says your iCloud storage goes back to the free 5 GB plan
  • With Family Sharing purchase sharing, Apple’s terms say the organizer’s payment methods pay for purchases family members make, except when a member’s account has store credit, which is always used first. So the organizer’s card is the one that needs to work
  • Apple’s terms also say all family members must share the same Home Country

Adding one of our cards

  1. Open the card detail page and use the copy buttons for the card number, expiry and CVC instead of retyping them
  2. Enter the cardholder name and the billing address exactly as shown on the card detail page. Apple’s support article says your billing details must match the information on file with your financial institution; watch out for iPhone or browser autofill replacing them
  3. For an Apple Account set to the United States, use a card from a US-issued BIN range: Apple lists most credit and debit cards among the payment methods it accepts there
  4. Keep enough on the card for the next charge, including tax. In our data, adding a card shows up as a $0 authorization; the first real charge comes with your first purchase or renewal

Over the last 90 days (2026-08-07 to 11-04), about two thirds of Apple authorizations on our cards were those $0 checks, and none asked for 3D Secure. About 3 in 10 people had an Apple charge declined at least once, most often because the card balance was below the charge.

FAQ

How do I change the payment method for iCloud or Apple Music?
Apple bills subscriptions such as iCloud+ and Apple Music to the payment methods on your Apple Account, so change the payment method on the account itself: on iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Payment & Shipping.
Which payment methods can I use with a US Apple ID?
For the United States, Apple lists Apple Account balance (from redeeming Apple Gift Card or adding funds), Apple Card, Apple Cash, Apple Pay, most credit and debit cards, and PayPal. Apple notes that payment methods are subject to change.
Can I use a prepaid or virtual card as my Apple ID payment method?
Apple’s US list includes most credit and debit cards and does not single out prepaid cards. In our data from the last 90 days, about 7 in 10 people who used one of our cards at Apple never had a charge declined. Whether a given card is accepted is up to Apple and the card issuer.
Does the billing address have to match my card?
Yes. Apple’s support article says your billing details must match the information on file with your financial institution. For one of our cards, that is the billing address shown on the card detail page.
What happens if my payment method cannot be charged?
Apple’s terms say Apple may try your other payment methods from top to bottom, and that for a subscription you remain responsible for any uncollected amount until it is paid. If a charge is declined, see our guide to Apple ID payment declines.
