3D Secure Authentication Failed: What It Means and What to Do
3D Secure (3DS) is the extra check a card issuer can ask for during an online payment, often a one-time code. When the check fails or is not completed, the payment does not go through. Here is what 3DS is, why it fails, and how to complete it on one of our cards.
- “3D Secure authentication failed”
- “Your card was declined. This transaction requires authentication.”
- “Authentication failed”
What 3D Secure is
EMVCo, which maintains the standard, says EMV 3-D Secure “helps payment card issuers and merchants around the world prevent card-not-present (CNP) fraud and increase the security of e-commerce payments.” You may see it branded as Visa Secure or Mastercard Identity Check.
Most of the time you see nothing: “For many transactions, this means consumers simply click ‘Buy’ and the payment is approved.” For riskier payments, EMVCo says issuers may require more, using “a one-time passcode, knowledge-based questions, biometrics, or other methods.” That extra step is the challenge, and it is where authentication usually fails.
The card issuer decides. Stripe, which runs checkout for many merchants, puts it this way: “While Stripe initiates the authentication request, the requirement comes from the issuer.”
Why authentication fails
| What happened | What to do |
|---|---|
| The code did not arrive, or arrived late | Check where your card delivers codes (for our cards, the card detail page and your email), then request a new code once |
| The code expired or was mistyped | Enter the latest code exactly; an older code no longer works |
| The verification page was closed or timed out | Keep the payment page open until the check is complete, then try again |
| You were offered SMS or a phone call, but the card sends codes another way | Pick the option that matches your card; on our cards that send codes by email only, choose Email |
| The card’s BIN range does not support 3D Secure | If the merchant insists on 3DS, use a card on a range that supports it |
| The issuer declined even after authentication | Contact the card issuer; for our cards, contact support with the merchant, the time and the last 4 digits of the card |
At a Stripe checkout, a failed authentication means the payment needs another payment method or a fresh attempt at 3DS. Stripe’s documentation also says that when 3DS is not available for a card, the payment can proceed without it.
3D Secure on our cards
- Some of our BIN ranges support 3D Secure and some do not. The card-opening page has a “3DS supported” filter, and each range’s fees say whether it supports 3DS
- On a supported card, the code appears on the card detail page as soon as it arrives and is also sent to your registered email. Keep the payment page open while you wait
- Some ranges deliver codes by email only: when the merchant’s verification page asks how you want to verify, choose Email
- Supported ranges charge a 3DS verification fee per check whenever a merchant starts verification, including frictionless checks with no code to enter; the amount is shown before you open the card
Over the last 90 days (2026-08-07 to 11-04), about 1 in 20 people who used our cards had a payment that triggered 3D Secure, and none of the decline reasons recorded on our cards in that period was a 3DS failure. At ChatGPT and Claude, adding a card was a $0 check with no 3DS.
