ChatGPT Plus Subscription: the Complete Guide — US Account Setup / BIN Choice / Cancellation

From registering a US-region OpenAI account to linking a card and paying — the complete ChatGPT Plus setup guide.

ChatGPT Plus is OpenAI’s paid subscription ($20/month) that unlocks the GPT-4 model, priority access, a longer context window, DALL·E image generation, Code Interpreter, and other paid features. This tutorial starts from zero and walks you through the complete register → switch region → bind card → upgrade flow.

If you have already tried subscribing and got declined, go straight to the complete ChatGPT Plus decline troubleshooting guide. This article is a beginner tutorial for a first-time subscription.

1. ChatGPT Plus Plans and Pricing

OpenAI’s personal paid plans come in 3 tiers:

PlanMonthly feeWho it fits
Plus$20Heavy individual users (the choice of 80% of users)
Pro$200High-frequency research / content creators (unlimited GPT-4 Pro mode)
Team$25/user/monthSmall team collaboration that needs data isolation

90% of individual users should pick Plus. Pro fits heavy users doing “4 hours a day + writing papers / books”; Team is an organization subscription.

2. Before You Subscribe

  • A US-region OpenAI account: pick United States as the country at sign-up (a mainland account works too, but risk control is stricter)
  • A US BIN virtual card: we recommend the RDVCC US virtual card. CITIC Global Pay / mainland cards pass less than 5% of the time
  • A US IP: you need to be on a US node when paying
  • A US billing address: any real address works (commonly 1 Apple Park Way, Cupertino, CA 95014)
  • Card balance ≥ $25: includes a pre-authorization buffer
⚠️ All 4 Dimensions Must Align

Account region + card BIN country + billing address + IP at payment time must all align to the US. Any single mismatch immediately lowers the success rate.

3. The Complete 5-Step Subscription Flow

  1. Step 1: Register or log in to your OpenAI account

Open chat.openai.com → Sign up. Registering with Gmail is more reliable. Verify your email + phone number (a mainland number works, but a Google Voice US number is recommended). After logging in, go to Settings → Account and confirm Country shows United States.

  2. Step 2: Switch to a US IP

Use a stable US node (Seattle / Los Angeles are the most stable). Self-check your IP at ipinfo.io; confirm country shows US and city is a real city. Avoid datacenter IP ranges (e.g. AWS / DigitalOcean datacenter IPs easily trigger risk control).

  3. Step 3: Open the upgrade page

In the ChatGPT main interface, click your avatar in the bottom-left corner → Upgrade plan → pick Plus ($20/month). The page redirects to the Stripe payment page (secure.stripe.com).

  4. Step 4: Fill in the card + billing address

The card number / expiry date / CVV come from the RDVCC US card details page. For the billing address, fill in:

    Address: 1 Apple Park Way
    City: Cupertino
    State: CA
    ZIP: 95014
    Country: United States

Fill in your name in pinyin (matching your RDVCC KYC identity).

  5. Step 5: Complete 3DS verification

Click Subscribe. If 3DS is triggered, a verification page pops up — the RDVCC 3DS verification code goes to your registered email; enter it within 5 minutes. After verification, $20 is charged and Plus takes effect immediately.

4. Verify the Plus Upgrade

After the payment succeeds:

  • The model picker in the top-left shows a “GPT-4” option
  • The avatar dropdown shows “My Plan: Plus”
  • Your registered email receives OpenAI’s subscription confirmation
  • $20.00 is deducted from your RDVCC card

5. Troubleshooting a Failed Subscription

If Subscribe fails at step 5, it is usually one of these reasons:

  • Card BIN declined (60%): you are not using a US BIN. See the ChatGPT Plus decline troubleshooting guide
  • 3DS verification timeout: the code was not entered within 5 minutes; just start again
  • IP not in the US: check whether your IP is really in the US
  • Multiple failures on the same account: OpenAI risk control locks it; wait 1-3 hours and retry
  • Card balance below the pre-authorization: make sure the card holds at least $25

FAQ

Q: Can I subscribe with a mainland China card?

In theory yes, but the measured success rate is below 5%. Even overseas-branded cards like “CITIC Global Pay” or “China Merchants Bank Visa Global” are still actively declined by OpenAI risk control. For a reliable subscription, a US BIN is a must.

Q: Can I use it on multiple devices after subscribing?

Yes. The Plus subscription is bound to the account; any device logged in to that account (web / iOS app / Android app / desktop app) gets Plus benefits. But in-app payment on iOS goes through Apple’s channel ($21.99), 10% more expensive. Subscribe on the web.

Q: How do I cancel the subscription?

Settings → My Plan → Manage my subscription → Cancel. After cancelling, the current month’s fee already charged is not refunded, and no charge is made on the next billing date. You can keep using it until the end of the month.

Q: Plus vs Pro — which one?

Plus at $20 already covers GPT-4o, DALL·E, Code Interpreter, Voice, and all other features. Pro at $200 mainly unlocks “unlimited o1 Pro calls”, plus a longer context window and higher priority. If your monthly usage is below 100 hours, Plus is more than enough.
